Oranga Tamariki Act 1989

Oranga Tamariki (previous known as CYFS) become involved when they feel that there are serious risks to the physical and/or emotional welfare of children and adolescents.

Oranga Tamariki have wide-ranging powers, to investigate child safety and welfare matters, and to make application to have children placed into the care of their Chief Executive.

Often, if family and friends are adequately advised, early, and proactive, in stepping up and supporting their loved ones, the need for Oranga Tamariki to become substantively involved can be minimised.
